Chitharathai or Alpinia officinarum is a rhizome belonging to the family, zingeberaeceae, cultivated in South East Asia. This rhizome is characterized by dark reddish brown colour which has a strong aroma. Chitarathai is traditionally used as a home remedy for cough, sore throat, chest congestion, and removing phlegm.
